Writers come in many forms. Poet, novelist, journalist, even blogger, to name a few. And as many ways, as there is to be a writer, there are equally as many ways to learn how to become one.
Personally, I think that for every individual, the road traveled to becoming a published writer is as unique as your fingerprints, your DNA.
Traveling merrily down my personal road, it occurred to me one day that learning about writing, studying the ins and outs of grammar just wasn’t enough. If I truly wanted to find my voice, I knew for me the best way was to look within the pages of books that fill the shelves both online and in bookstores. So, I put the keyboard away and read. I read anything and everything in my intended genre, and once in a while, when the mood struck, I would step outside that box and read something else. Some stories were truly inspiring, while others were put into the “I’ll learn from that pile.” And when I came across the book with a red shoe and a foot that was something more than human, I knew from the first page I was reading something special.
Maybe it’s because I’m half Chinese, and I was drawn to the fact that the story took place in Asia. But from the very beginning, I instantly connected to the voice of this story.
Cinder is the first in The Lunar Chronicles but happily the not the end. The first chapter for me did everything a first chapter should. I could picture where I was, imagine the sigh of relief on the first page so vividly that I’m pretty sure I sighed as well. By the end of the first few pages, I was hooked.
Although I had some image in my mind what this story was going to be about, I was wrong. I wasn’t prepared for the genre-bending, entertaining series that had a mix of strong characters that came from reimagining timeless classic tales. Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Winter, and even Fairest were able to bring strong storylines individually, as well as weave themselves into a coherent and exciting tapestry.
Marissa Meyers ticks all the boxes, imaginative worlds filled with subplots and characters to love, and root for, while equally balancing villains you can almost relate to. Clever, witty banter was perfectly mixed with an emotional struggle for all the characters making the entire series a page-turner.
After reading hundreds of series throughout the spectrum of the YA genre, The Lunar Chronicles stands out as one not to miss. For me personally, Marissa Meyer invoked inspiration in my own writing as Violet’s journey may begin in Power Divided, but it will continue as The Evolutionaries Series unfolds.
Got a copy of her books! It was such a great event, and great to see such a talented community of writers and readers together!
